Single Board Performs All Control Functions For Power Converters

Vernon, New Jersey — VG Controls announces the availability of Integrated Modular Controller (IMC) for medium or high power rectifiers. It can also be used for other converters such as reactive power compensators, AC line regulators, furnaces, inverters, etc.
IMC provides complete solution for all the tasks performed by a rectifier control system: firing pulses generation for up to 12 phases; regulation; AC and DC measurement (including active and reactive power, RMS values, power factor, etc.); AC and DC protection; alarm annunciation and Programmable Logic controller (PLC) functions.
In addition the IMC offers advanced features like troubleshooting over modem, remote software upgrade, built-in high speed software "oscilloscope" (Softscope) and others. The system can trigger on any alarm condition and store actual voltage/currents waveshapes before and after the trigger for a total duration of 250 msec; up to 8 such events can be stored in memory. Later on the information can be uploaded to a PC and viewed there. As a result many problems can be fixed over the phone without a field trip.
The unit supports distributed I/O to reduce cost of wiring. Communication between remote boards and controller is done via fiber optic cable (plastic or glass) to eliminate noise, reduce damages caused by insulation breakdown and improve safety.
The PLC is implemented in the software (Softlogic) on the same board, thus eliminating wiring between PLC and main controller common in other systems. The PLC supports al five IEC1131 languages (ladder diagrams, function blocks, state diagrams, structured text and assembly language). Special function blocks can be written by user in C language if needed. PLC program can be both debugged and modified over the phone using IBM PC; PLC program simulator simplifies development and maintenance of software.
Both hardware and software are modular allowing easy scaling up or down, so the control system can be tailored to customer’s specifications. The system can support up to 1024 digital I/O and 512 analog I/O.
All processing is done digitally on one board by 32 bit RISC processor; 4 MB of FLASH disk and 16 MB of RAM provide ample memory; 14 channel, 13 bit, 3.5 usec/point A/D captures instantaneous voltages and currents.
Optional modules provide different operator interfaces, firing transformers interface, digital and analog I/O, fiber optic firing and others.
The main board is powered by either 110 VAC or 5 VDC, its size is 8"x11".
